Assault rifles are very popular infantry guns in most armies. They are shoulder-fired and they use detatchable magazines and are selective fire. The minimum assault rifle range is about 300 meters. Assault rifles are in between LMG's (light machine guns, which are used more for light support), and submachineguns (small assault rifles that fire small cartriges). They are usualy automatic & semi automatic. The name comes from the German word Sturmgewehr (that means storm rifle). The Maschinenpistole 43 was the first assault rifle. They have intermediate-power cartriges (less than battle rifles and more than pistols). A good example of an assault rifle is the AK category of rifles
